Typically used in a night routine, serums are applied before moisturiser to treat the skin. Serums are great to help treat some skin conditions you just need to know the right ‘actives’ to treat it.
If you have an oily or acne prone skin don’t be scared of using oily products, key ingredients like retinol and niacinamide allow you to hydrate your skin while controlling the sebum production. a younger skin would typically start at a lower grade retinol between 0.2% and 0.5% no more than this. Retinol at 1% is typically for more mature skin that has a very slow, lethargic cell turn over. Retinol has massive anti ageing benefits as it helps quicken cell turn over and will therefore reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
if you are going to use retinol use it after applying moisturiser to your skin and wait 10-15 minutes before applying the retinol. Ease your skin into it start off using it once a week and build up to 3-5 times a week and no more than that. Don’t use during pregnancy.
Niacinamide helps build cells in the skin while also protecting them from environmental stresses, such as sunlight, pollution, and toxins. It’s a great active ingredient for acne, congested skin and pigmentation.
Azelaic acid is a naturally occurring acid that helps the skin renew itself more quickly and therefore reduces blemishes and blackhead formation - works well with niacinamide.
Everybody should be using a hyaluronic acid. hyaluronic acid will hydrate, it can attract 1000x its weight in water so it’s the ultimate ingredient in any hydrating product.
If you suffer from pigmentation Vitamin C and Trenexamic Acid are key ingredients to brighten those dark spots. I would personally use a vitamin C in your routine anyway, it’s a great active for helping your skin protect itself from stresses such as pollution and UV rays. Vitamin C is also a key ingredient to help aid collagen production within the skin.
If you suffer from Redness/ Rosacea CBD is amazing to calm the redness and help even your skin tone.
This is one of the key parts of a skin care routine where you can treat a skin condition. A good serum and exfoliator is something I would defiantly invest in. There’re some actives that you cannot use at the same time, However you can use one in the AM and one in a PM routine in most cases or alternate days.
Retinoids + AHA, BHA = will cause irritation, redness, peeling and dryness - use on alternate nights.
Vitamin C + AHA, BHA = both PH dependent to be active, not ideal to use together to receive maximum benefits from both. - Vitamin C in the AM - AHA, BHA in the PM.
Retinoids + Vitamin C = irritation, redness, inflammation can cause peeling and dryness. - Use vitamin C in the AM - Retinol In the PM.
